The hippo roamed the Fourways area for nearly a month.

Authorities are not satisfied without proof and the Gauteng Agriculture Department said it is working closely with the North West provincial government to find the hippo and confirm its location, according to EWN.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust is also using drones to try and determine the wandering hippo’s whereabouts.

The Gauteng Agriculture Department said it first received a call about a hippo on the loose in Chartwell near the Jukskei River on December 29, 2020.

Earlier this month, a video circulated on social media showing a hippo in a backyard pool. Residents were endlessly entertained and commented on how the hippo is ‘living its best life’. Others said that the footage was in fact taken elsewhere.

Residents are warned that if they should come across the hippo to not approach or interact with it in any way.

Any sightings can be reported to Law Enforcement official Erasmus Nkabinde on 071 257 7481, reports Radio 702.
