CAIRO

Cairo is the largest city in Africa and stretches along the banks of the River Nile. The majority of the city lies to the east of the Nile. Most visitors come to Cairo to visit one of the Ancient wonders of the World, the magnificent Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, which are about 11 miles south-west of the centre of Cairo. The three colossal Pyramids can be explored by means of tunnels that go deep inside the interior of the Pyramids, and by night there is an atmospheric Light and Sound Show, which is well worth seeing.

However, there is much more for visitors to experience than the Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum, located in central Cairo, contains over 120,000 relics including the celebrated treasures of the Tutankhamen Tomb. Discovered by Howard Carter in 1921, the collection includes the solid gold death mask, the three golden catafalques, jewellery, scarabs, diadems, weapons, ceremonial gilded couches and chariots, all of which were buried with the 18th-dynasty boy king.

The Cairo Tower, on El-Gezirah Island, provides a panoramic view of Cairo from the restaurant, located at the top of the tower. With literally dozens of mosques and Coptic churches to discover, the Ibn Tulun Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and is a fine example of classical Islamic architecture.

Old Cairo lies to the south of Cairo city centre, and the Citadel, the Coptic Museum and the Hanging Church are all in this region and should not be missed.

Cairo offers a vast range of shopping opportunities from modern shopping centres, including the Galleria shopping and leisure centre adjacent to Grand Hyatt Cairo, to the famous souks. The old bazaar, Khan El-Khalili, is one of the most interesting places to shop and haggle over spices, perfume, gold and silver jewellery, leather work and brass or copper ware.

The President Hotel

This hotel is located close to the Flamenco Hotel in the Zamalek area of Gezira Island. It's one of the greener and quieter areas in Cairo and an area where many foreigners working in Egypt lives.

The restaurant Le Terrace serves oriental and international dishes, and one gets a good view over Zamalek from here. The restaurant is the place for breakfast in the morning and next to the restaurant is the cosy bar at the President.

Cairo Cellar is the pub located as the name states, in the cellar. A popular meeting place for the locals, foreigners living and working here and of course guests of the hotel.

The hotel has a total of 117 rooms with air-conditioning, television with satellite channels, direct phone and mini-bar.
