UNDER R250 A PERSON A NIGHT B&B AND SELF-CATERING LODGES

Le Paradis, Widenham
This guesthouse overlooks the beach between Amanzimtoti and Scottburgh. Only three of the chalets have sea views, while the other four are set in the garden. Never mind, all guests can enjoy the crash of waves and sea views from around the swimming pool.

The three-star chalets have private entrances, kitchens, television with M-Net, braai facilities, air-conditioning and secure parking. If you're particular about décor, the pictures on their website give you a good idea of what to expect.

The beach, with its rock pools, is a mere 200 metres from the guesthouse. You're also close to attractions such as Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, Tala Private Game Reserve, Croc World and various golf courses. Divers will find this is a convenient base from which to enjoy the coral reefs and shipwrecks of Aliwal Shoal - the launch site is about three kilometres away.

$ to $$ Self-catering is from R150 an adult a night sharing, R100 a child under 12 (under threes stay for free). Phone 031-916-3770, e-mail leparadis@tiscali.co.za or visit http://www.leparadis.co.za.

The Merry Crab, Glenmore Beach
You'll find this four-star resort hidden among the foliage of the Admiralty Reserve. The beach is a short walk away, but if you don't feel like getting salty, you can take a dip in the swimming pool situated near the boma.

There are studios which sleep two people in an en-suite guestroom similar to a bachelor pad. Alternatively, stay in a cabana which sleeps four - two in the bedroom and two on a sleeper couch in the lounge. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen, DStv, sundeck, hammock and braai area.

$$ Self-catering rates start at R195 a person a night sharing a studio and R250 a person sharing a cabana. Phone 039-319-1230, e-mail stay@themerrycrab.co.za or visit http://www.themerrycrab.co.za.

Figtree Lodge, Southbroom
Wake to the sound of the ocean at one of three lodges - Figtree, Swallow's Nest or Kingfisher. You can stay on a B&B or self-catering basis. Each cottage has a lounge/dining room with television, kitchen, honesty bar, veranda, swimming pool and safe parking. The main Southbroom beach and golf club is a five-minute walk away.

Figtree Loft is aptly named: the cottage nestles under the leafy branches of large fig trees. It sleeps six in three bedrooms with three bathrooms, so will work for a family or a group of friends.

Swallow's Nest sleeps eight in four en-suite bedrooms. It offers views up the Imbezane River and surrounding area. Kingfisher is a one-bedroomed unit suitable for a couple. It adjoins the main house but has its own facilities. Baby sitting and laundry are done on request.

$$ B&B is R250 a person a night sharing, self-catering is from R180 a person. Phone 039-316-6547, e-mail sbelite@lantic.net or visit the website at http://www.figtreelodge.co.za.

Ipithi Retreat, Leisure Bay
Stay in a log cabin at this bush lodge set on nine hectares of indigenous grassland and coastal forest. See bushbuck, blue duikers and a variety of birds (94 species have been identified) while walking about the property. The beach is less than a kilometre away.

Guest cabins are linked to the lodge by wooden walkways. The main building has a bar/lounge, DStv, dining room, sundeck and swimming pool. The cabins have either two or three bedrooms; each has two bathrooms, a sitting area with television, kettle and fridge, plus a veranda.

$$$ A full breakfast and a four-course dinner are included in the rate of R260 an adult a night and R200 a child under 10. Phone 039-319-1935, e-mail ipithi@mweb.co.za or visit http://www.wheretostay.co.za/ipithiretreat.
