Namibia is a land of vast open spaces and immense contrasts. The landscapes range from desert in the south to the great sand dunes of the Namib Desert in the west, from the wild and windswept Skeleton Coast to the white salt pans of Etosha and the dense bushveld of the Caprivi Strip. A photographer's dream, Namibia's landscapes are unbelievably beautiful and often other worldly.
With an abundance of wildlife, Namibia has several parks to see the Big Five, other mammals and hundreds of species of birds. Etosha National Park is a huge wilderness home to over a hundred species of mammal. The Caprivi Strip, nourished by the Okavango River, is a green oasis to the north of the arid country, where you can see Namibia's water-bound wildlife.
The Namib Desert, stretching 1600 kilometres along Namibia's coast, is thought to be the oldest desert in the world. It forms part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the world's largest nature reserves. Waves of red and pink dunes undulate for thousands of kilometres, providing home to an amazing array of wildlife and plants. The magnificent, red dune fields of Sossusvlei are high on the tourist itinerary, offering quintessential desert vistas. The desolate and beautiful Skeleton Coast is a treacherous stretch of coastline littered with shipwrecks. Attractions along the coast include surfing and the beach and adventure paradise of Swakopmund, where you can go fishing, dolphin and whale watching, horse riding, quad biking and take a hot air balloon rides over the desert. Don't forget to visit the quaint colonial town Walvis Bay.
To the south, the Fish River Canyon is one of Africa's greatest natural wonders. The massive 500m deep canyon is now part of the Ais-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, a huge wilderness that stretches from Namibia to South Africa.
Namibia is renowned as an adventure sport destination, with skydiving, parachuting, sand boarding, mountain biking and quad biking on offer, as well as camel trekking, paragliding off dunes and 4x4ing.
