Good news for the conservation of South Africa's coastline: the long-awaited Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Act came into effect on 1 December 2009. It's the first law of its kind to manage the country's coastline and its natural resources.

The value of South Africa's coastal goods and services was estimated to be about R168-billion a year in 1998 - equivalent to 35 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product but, according to the Department of Environmental Affairs, environmentally insensitive development and poor decision making has wasted much of this wealth.

ICM recognises ecological, social and economic interactions and is based on sustainable sharing of benefits. The Act will be implemented in phases and some sections will come into force only after further consultation. These include ownership, leases, concessions and unlawful structures on coastal public property.
