The HP Sprocket Mobile Printer lets you make travel memories you can literally feel.

The biggest grouse travellers have with smartphone photography? Most of your holiday snaps never see the light of day. The HP Sprocket is one of the latest mobile printers that seeks to solve that problem by giving you the power to snap, edit and print immediately.

The printer is about the size of an external hard drive (115mm x 75mm) and fits snugly into the pocket of a pair of jeans. It charges via USB and, thanks to an adjustable Auto Off function, has a remarkably long battery life. On a full charge the Getaway team used it over a period of three days (printing about five images per day) and found the battery still had 65% of its charge at the end, which makes it great for long road trips.

Connecting it to your smartphone (via Bluetooth), loading paper, and printing is super-easy. An app (Sprocket is available on Android and iOS) guides you through the process. There’s also an editing suite which allows you to fine-tune your image, select a filter (much like Instagram) and even a frame. You can print existing images on your phone, or shoot new ones through the app.

Pics are produced using ZINK (zero ink) photo paper which uses heat to draw colour from crystals embedded in the paper. And though you may not get ultra-high quality prints (the zero-ink technology has some limitations, especially in high-contrast, detail-rich scenes) you will get a compact, eco-friendly travel companion that gives your holiday snaps the tactile lives they deserve. HP ZINK photo paper (available in packs of 20 for R199) also has a peel-off sticky back which turn your prints into stickers!

It’s a great way to make new friends on your travels or simply remember good times with the old ones.
