In the North West Province, Madikwe Game Reserve offers 75 000 hectares of malaria-free wilderness. Made up of reclaimed farmland and opened in 1991, Madikwe is one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of it being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for the area. The park is famous for its African wild dogs, a highly endangered species. Madikwe is also good for Big Five game viewing, and cheetahs can often be spotted hunting on the grasslands.
Madikwe is on an ecotone where sweet mixed bushveld meets arid Kalahari savanna. Broad-leafed woodlands occupy the central parts of Madikwe, bounded by the Tweedepoort mountain range which virtually bisects the park and the Dwarsberg on the southern border. The wide range of habitats means that birding in the area is very exciting, with over 350 species including a number of raptors.
