Port St Johns is one of the Wild Coast's most attractive seaside resorts. It's located at the Umzimvubu River mouth surrounded by subtropical rainforests, mangrove swamps and steep cliffs. The twin mountains of Thesiger and Sullivan - named after two British officers - lie on both sides of the river mouth to form a protective gate for Port St Johns, which has become a mecca for hippies and backpackers. Visitors are spoilt with beautiful beaches, surfing, excellent fishing, canoeing, quad biking or boat-based dolphin and whale watching. Go on a hike through the indigenous forests, spot 250 bird species at the Silaka Nature Reserve or explore the rich Xhosa culture in rural villages on horseback as part of the community-run Amadiba Trail.
