The Xhariep region in the west of the Free State is named after the Gariep Dam, South Africa's largest water reservoir at the border with the Northern Cape. It fulfils visitors' expectations of the Free State with its endless plains and cattle farmlands. There are various San rock art sites and fossil exhibitions around Bethulie, the memorial site of the largest British concentration camp during the Anglo-Boer War.
