Franschhoek blaze erased

Posted on 9 February 2010

I left Cape Town thinking I had ten days to get to Durban so took a drive through Franschhoek. By the time I got there the fire had, according to the local authorities been bought under control. But not before it had ravaged the mountainside that forms the backdrop of the town. I think the close-up photograph of the ravaged bush and burning stump shows what the firefighters are up against. Even though they’d put the flame out, a bit of wind fans the smoldering stumps and it can all start up again. Hats off to the men and women who tackle this dangerous and largely thankless work.
