11 cool food trucks in Joburg and Cape Town

The street food movement is revolutionary! Food trucks date back to the late 17th century in the United States, where they were just ice cream trucks selling soft serve treats. These days, though, food trucks can be found all over the place, and trucks are now equivalent to modern restaurants on wheels.

As spring takes off, here is a list of food trucks (that serve mouth-watering food) currently operating in Joburg and Cape Town. Please share any others that are not mentioned below:

Who says hotdogs aren’t healthy? All products used by Die Wors Rol are all locally sourced and organic products. The sauces are homemade and the 100% pork sausage, made by the Sweetwell Farm in Stellenbosch is 22 cm long! Die Wors Rol caters for up to 1000 people, should you decide to host a shindig. They can be found in and around the CBD and caters at personal events.

In the mood for an authentic curry but Durban is too far? Circling around Cape Town is the Durban’s Finest Curry food truck with tantalising Tandoori chicken, prawn curry and lamb bunny chow enough to make anyone’s mouth water. You can find the Durban’s Finest Curry Food Truck on Monday and Tuesdays at Dunkley Square, or request one of the food trucks for your own private event.

If the Indian curry wasn’t strong enough for your taste buds then this is a must try! The Taco Van comes from the El Burro restaurant in Greenpoint. You are spoilt for choice with Mexican tacos and smoked jalapenos stuffed with cheese, nachos and quesadillas.

These delicious gourmet pizzas are carefully wood fired. The Earthfire Pizzas have thin crispy bases with an array of toppings to choose from. Earthfire Pizza is available at The Range Friday Night Markets in Tokai and the Route 44 Market in Stellenbosch on Saturday and Sunday.

5. Kreativ Juices

A healthier option is never a bad idea, especially if maintaining your summer figure is a priority for you. Kreativ Juices makes healthy fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies at really good rates. Available every Wednesday at the Kenilworth Racecourse from 4pm to 9pm.

6. Las Paletas

Fig cheesecake, white chocolate and berries, brownie cheesecake, hibiscus flower… Are you drooling yet? Las Paletas sorbet and dairy lollies are handmade from 100% real fruit, spices and dairy. They have a food truck that you’ll often see at events around Cape Town and Joburg (it’s available for corporate hire too) but if your craving gets too much, you can purchase Las Paletas at selected Markets, Pick and Pays, Spars and Wellness Warehouse.

Beef and cheese: such a formidable combination. Find the red, black and white bus seven days a week during lunch time at various locations in the CBD. The bus is also at Market on Main in Maboneng, Neighbourgood Market on Saturday and the Fourways Food Market every Sunday.

11. 5 Star Street Chef

Find a spot on the pavement and dig in, weekdays from 11:30 for lunch hour. Smaller than traditional South African Burgers, these locally bought ingredients burger have an Asian twist. Available from the Jozi Food Market in Greenside and the Neighbourgood Market.

12. 27 Club Catering and Food Trailer

 

The colourful food truck can be found all around Johannesburg.

 

Vegans, we have not forgotten about you. Sink your teeth into a Black bean and Azuki Bean Chilli Taco, topped with a Vegan feta cheese. This hippie-inspired 27 Club food truck can be found all around Joburg. The 27 Club truck does various events and caters at private functions.
