Winter in Cape Town has its own joys – warm fireplaces, glühwein and some great winter fine dining specials. Treat yourself to some of Cape Town’s tastiest dishes at the lowest prices you’ll find all year.

The time has come to put away the flip flops and sarongs. No more sundowners by the beach or long Sunday braais next to the swimming pool. Yes, winter is here, but not without its own beauty. Have a glass of glühwein next to a roaring fireplace, snuggle under the duvet with a good book or break out the wellies and go stomp in the puddles. Or you could don your coat and gloves and get to these top Cape Town restaurants for their 2017 winter specials.

 

1. Blanko at Alphen Boutique Hotel, Constantia

Their winter set menu includes potato gnocchi, sirloin, mushroom risotto, Cape Malay chicken & prawn curry, line fish with garlic baby potatoes, Dutch pancakes and Tiramisu cookie with Frangelico ice cream. Enjoy two courses for R220, or three courses for R260.

Blanko is an Italian contemporary restaurant.

2. Con Brio Bistro, Vredehoek

Child-friendly, vegetarian-friendly and foodie-friendly with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The small plate selections are designed to be shared by the table, creating an interactive, relaxed style of eating while their reasonable prices are designed to keep you coming back for more! They are currently running a dinner special, with any two dishes from the menu for R150, or a starter, main and dessert for R180. On Tuesdays, you can also enjoy two-for-one burgers.

3. Bistro 1682 at Steenberg Estate, Constantia

Named after the year in which Steenberg was established, Bistro Sixteen82 sits adjacent to Steenberg’s winery and spills into its surrounding indigenous gardens with a terrace dining area leading to reflective water features, with views of the magnificent stone mountains and expansive Winelands. This winter you can enjoy a chef’s selection of five tapas dishes to share per couple for R300. Dishes on the tapas menu include bacon & jalapeno spring rolls, courgette & Gruyere fritters, smoked salmon cannelloni & lemon butter and West Coast oysters.

4. The President Hotel, Bantry Bay

Don’t worry about preparing Sunday lunch. Executive Chef Paterson’s added a Sunday lunch buffet offering with delectable dishes such as the seafood ragout, sirloin and roast chicken- and tantalising desserts from lemon tart to trifle and live entertainment in the background.

5. The President Hotel, Bantry Bay

Enjoy beautiful ocean views while tucking into this hotel’s delicious winter fare. Choose from the winter warmer special at their Botany Café where you will find daily hot pot specials for R69, served daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Hot pot dishes include a Cape seafood chowder, pepper steak pot pies and chicken and mushroom pot pies, oxtail and barley soup, wok fried prawns and duck.

6. The Bungalow, Clifton

There’s nothing like a delicious lamb curry when the weather’s miserable. Spoil yourself with a rich mix of mussels, fillet pasta, a neck of lamb, Thai chicken curry and Malva pudding or Creme Brulee for dessert.

7. La Belle Bistro and Bakery, Camps Bay

Enjoy the views of the Atlantic Ocean and a lovely dinner at La Belle Bistro and Bakery. The menu includes Cape Malay mussels, roast potato soup, roast chicken, grilled sirloin, mushroom parcels and a sticky banana bread pudding, pear and chocolate crumble and a chocolate tart for dessert.

8. Moyo Restaurant, Kirstenbosch

Tuck into their various winter specials while enjoying views of Table Mountain. Buffet breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays for R115 and from Monday to Friday until 16:00 and a winter dinner special for R185 (two courses) or R225 (three courses) daily from 18:00. Dishes on the set winter menu include mussels in curried coconut broth, meatballs, curried butternut lasagne, line fish Jollof, Morrocan chicken and decadent chocolate brownies.

9. Paranga, Camps Bay

Paranga’s ground floor location puts it on eye-level with the beach, so whether you choose to feel the sea spray on your face or prefer the cozy intimacy of the interior, you can be assured of an eyeful of ocean blue. Their winter special has two courses for R250 or three courses for R300. The menu includes dishes such as mussels, sweetcorn veloute, roast chicken, butternut risotto, oxtail, chocolate tart and tirasmu.

10. Pepenero, Mouille Point

Pepenero has uninterrupted views of the Atlantic and a versatile Italianesque menu. Relax on the expansive deck or in a private booth and tuck into their winter set menu at R180 for two courses or R220 for three courses. Dishes include soup, line fish, chicken saltimbocca, veal, pannacotta ice cream, zabaglione and meringue.

11. Planet Bar & Restaurant at Belmond Mount Nelson, Gardens

Every Monday to Saturday from 18:30 to 22:30 you can tuck into two courses for R325, including tea, coffee. In addition, every evening sees a pianist playing romantic tunes to set the mood. A Brandy and Tapas menu is also on offer in the bar throughout winter and can be enjoyed at the cosy fireplace in the bar or at a dinner table in the restaurant if you prefer.

12. Pure Restaurant, Hout Bay Manor

A listed historical building (built in 1871), Hout Bay Manor has been gracefully restored to its former elegance. Tuck into two-for-one tapas on Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 19:00. You can combine this with their Happy Hour, which includes wine and beer (excluding craft beers) from 17:00 to 19:00.

13. Azure Restaurant at The Twelve Apostles Hotel, Camps Bay

Take “let’s go out for dinner and a movie” to a whole new level at The Twelve Apostles Hotel this winter. Enjoy a three-course dinner (with palate-cleansing sorbet between the starter and main course) followed by a movie in their private 16-seater movie theatre with complimentary sweets and popcorn, as well as a milkshake or hot chocolate.

Their winter lunch special available from 12:00-14:00 until the end of September. Monday to Friday, you can take an hour or two away from the office.The express lunch includes a complimentary glass of wine and a shuttle service from Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront.  The set menu includes baby calamari risotto with pickled sultanas and parmesan crumbs, roast chicken breast with baby gems and a strawberry mille-feuille dessert. Vegetarian options are also available.

14. Rick’s Café Américain, Gardens

Rick’s Café Américain is a Casablanca-style restaurant and a firm favourite with those in the know. With its three fireplaces, it makes for a perfect winter’s day. From Monday to Friday you can grab lunch including Mexican-flavoured chicken strips with peppers and mushrooms in a savoury pancake, hake in beer batter with homemade tartar sauce, Moroccan spiced fish cakes on roasted vegetables, Cape Malay beef roti with tomato and cucumber salsa and Moroccan style flame-grilled calamari steak marinated in Harissa paste on a chickpea and tomato salsa. If you miss the lunch special, between 15:00 and 19:00 you can tuck into a tapas or mezze platter for two, including 500ml of house wine, from R145. Banting meals are also available and they have some great drinks specials too!

15. Sevruga Restaurant, V&A Waterfront

If spicy fried calamari, tandoori ostrich fillet, venison, roasted potato gnocchi, creme brulee and white chocolate martini are some of your favourite things, then the winter tasting menu at Sevruga should be on your winter dining list. Choose any two courses from the menu for only R210, or three courses for R250 served with a glass of Protea Sauvignon Blanc or Protea Merlot. There is a non-alcoholic option available.

16. The Vineyard Hotel, Newlands

A country cottage, built among vineyards by the legendary Lady Anne Barnard, is now a luxury hotel with five restaurants. The elegant Square Restaurant is offering a two-course lunch for R250 and a three-course lunch for R285. On the menu you’ll find a soup of the day, a crostini platter with smoked ostrich, white cheddar and red onion chutney, grilled Cape Winelands Kassler, butternut, ricotta and sage butter gnocchi, rooibos crème brulee and Cape date & walnut brandy pudding and more. Or relax in the Garden Lounge and enjoy an early dinner with a glass of Nativo wine. The special is served between 16:00 to 19:00 and changes each week.

17. Tobago’s Restaurant at Radisson Blu, Granger Bay

Tuck into their curry lunch special for R145, with a choice of a vegetable, lamb or chicken curry served with rice, a roti, a poppadum and sambals. In the evening you can enjoy a two-course set dinner menu with a complimentary glass of wine for R235 or three courses with a glass of wine for R295. Dishes include soup, roasted chicken, beef short rib, hake in three ways, vegetable curry and for dessert nut cake, warm pear and walnut, hot chocolate pot.

18. Wang Thai, Milnerton and Somerset West

All the dishes at Wang Thai are prepared by Thai-trained chefs and made from authentic, imported spices and the freshest locally-sourced ingredients. 19. Foxcroft Restaurant and Bakery, Constantia

The Winter special at this newly-opened spot is a four-course meal for R295 per person, which includes fresh oysters with water lemon, tuna crudo with green olives, pork drippings, crispy squid, duck with fermented plum and gypsy tart with passion fruit sorbet and citrus salt.

20. UMI Japanese Restaurant, Camps Bay

If Japanese food is your preferred taste then UMI has a Winter special just for you! Delight in some Teriyaki, pork bun sliders, steamed mussels, Udon stir fry noodles and white chocolate and banana spring rolls.

21. Kyoto Garden Sushi, Gardens

With a starters choice of tuna tartare or a vegetable tempura, you can enjoy a three-course meal with a complimentary glass of wine. For the main dish, you may choose between Duck Ramen noodles or line fish with a special rice. End the evening on a sweet note, with Cherry Blossom ice cream or black sesame seed ice cream.

Included with your meal are complimentary Edamame Beans to start and Green tea to finish.

22. La Tete, City Centre

La Tete, on Bree Street, is known for its nose-to-tail approach to food. Their winter special offers either a two or three course menu, and you can enjoy salt hake, potato and boiled egg, crispy duck, watercress and radishes, carrots, or freekeh and goats curd – and top it off with a chocolate pot for dessert.

23. The Roundhouse Restaurant, Camps Bay

Enjoy dinner with a view of the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop at The Roundhouse Restaurant. This winter, they offer a four-course meal as well as a four-course meal that includes a pairing. The meals consist of Spiced Hake in a carrot and cashew puree, beef sirloin with gnocchi, grilled broccoli and mushroom sauce, to be topped with a souffle of the day.
