Christmas is the one time of year where we’re meant to indulge in delicious food. It’s about family, cooking, and eating. So, stop calorie-counting for a couple of days and feast on these delicious Christmas recipes – we’ve got ideas for everything from Christmas breakfast to turkey stuffing. And, because it’s not exactly snowing in South Africa at Christmas time, we’ve got some uniquely southern hemisphere festive recipes in here. Bring on the mince-pie ice cream!

Christmas breakfast

Panettone with mandarin jam

Italian Christmas cake for breakfast with mandarin jam: possibly the best gourmet Christmas breakfast possible.

Blueberry and banana French toast

French toast is a delicious breakfast to serve up on Christmas morning. It’s also easy to make a large batch if you’re feeding a big family crowd.

Canapes and starters

Sausages stuffed with seasonal fruit

Sausages on a stick – no one will be able to say no to these once they’ve had a few festive tipples on Christmas day/eve.

Figs wrapped in Parma ham

A delicious Italian summer snack – and perfect for a sophisticated Christmas lunch or dinner starter.

Christmas main dishes

Butterflied leg of lamb on the braai

Lamb is not a traditional Christmas meat but it can be made on the braai so why not have it instead of turkey?

Turkey on the braai with cashew nut stuffing

This is Getaway Magazine editor Cameron Ewart-Smith’s favourite Christmas recipe.

Christmas gammon glazed with brandy and coke

Why not incorporate ‘Klippies en coke’ into your Christmas feast?

Shallot and brie tart tatin

This tart tatin is a delicious option for the vegetarians at the Christmas table.

Christmas desserts

Ice cream Christmas pudding

Christmas in South Africa is too hot for traditional Christmas pud (although my family insists on one every year). Try this ice cream Christmas pudding instead – it’s got all the festiveness of the traditional pud, but it’s perfect for southern hemisphere summer temperatures.

Christmas mince pies

What’s Christmas without mince pies? This easy recipe will motivate you to make your own – so much better than the store-bought variety.

Christmas cookies

These Christmas cookies are the perfect festive treat to bake for your work colleagues, hairdresser, your kids’ teachers, and Santa Claus.

Christmas ice cream cake with white chocolate and berries

It has mushed up mince pies, crushed Crunchies, lots of cream, brandy AND a white chocolate casing. Could this be the ultimate Christmas pudding?

Amarula malva pudding

For those who love pudding but aren’t into candied fruits, bake an easy malva pudding with a boozy touch – it’s sure to please the whole family.

Poached prune tart with red wine glaze

Another non-traditional Christmas dessert, this poached prune tart with a red wine glaze is the pudding to make if you’re putting on a sophisticated Christmas meal.
