Ben McRae

For 14 years I have been an Ocean Lifeguard based out of Wollongong on the east coast of Australia. Over this time I have been afforded the chance to travel and work all over the world, but it was my first trip to visit family in Africa ten years ago that prompted me to take up photography. I was instantly hooked.

The following year, I travelled overland from Ethiopia to Cape Town and was blown away at the diversity of the continent’s contrasts and felt I needed to see more. Since then I have returned annually to travel thousands upon thousands of kilometres, quiet often in circles, in search of that perfect image. I am amazed at the diversity of the tribes that exist in sometime the smallest of areas, and it is this world that time seems to have forgotten that keeps pulling me back. My technical abilities have seen a dramatic improvement from the years of travel and so has my camera bag, which has quadrupled in size and weight, but the one of the first things I did learn was that it is not the equipment that allows a great image to be captured, it is the subject that is before you that makes an image and this is one thing Africa is definably full of.
