Ben Mcrae is a regular Getaway Gallery contributor (he was awarded third place in the 2012 competition) with his outstanding portfolio documenting cultures across Africa as well as in his homeland Australia. Both his intimate connection with the Himba living in a village outside of Epupa in Namibia and his deep photographic understanding shine through clearly in this captivating photograph. Ben Wins an EOS 5D Mk III camera. His prize also includes an 24–105mm L lens, an EF 70–200mm f2.8 L IS USM Mk II lens and an EF 1.4 X Mk III lens extender, all worth r71100.
Anthony Grote is always looking for a different angle to photograph sports, so he asked surfer Olivia Symcox to model for a shoot, with her duckdiving under the waves on the South Coast near Umkomaas on a day when the water was crystal clear. The result: this dynamic and emotive action photograph. Anthony wins an EOS 7D camera, including a 15–85mm IS lens and an EF 100–400mm f4.5–f5.6 L IS USM lens, all worth R39000.
Etienne Oosthuizen came across this aardvark sniffing the air on a little-used road in Samara Private Game Reserve in the Karoo. The unbelievably rare scene and incredible light make this a once-in-a- lifetime photograph. Etienne wins: EOS 60D camera, including a 18–135mm IS lens and an EF 70–300mm f4–f5.6 L IS USM lens, all worth R30000.
Rudi van den Heever was photographing the thousands of doves at the Cubitje Quap waterhole in Kgalagadi Trans- frontier Park, when this lanner falcon struck gold by catching one. The falcon was ripping the dove to pieces and enjoying its breakfast when the goshawk suddenly appeared in his viewfinder, adding an extra chaotic element to this extraordinarily dramatic story. Rudi wins an EOS 650D camera and a 18–55mm IS lens, all worth R7600.
