The photo was taken at Umngazana on the Transkei Wild Coast between 10 and 12pm. I knew that this cave faces perfectly south, and therefore had potential for a startrail image. Recently I was down there when conditions were perfect – a cloudless clear night with a half moon to light up the beach. In all, 14 consecutive 10-minute exposures were taken to capture the star trails, and one 15 second exposure to capture the cave walls, which I lit up with an LED light. These images were then stacked in photoshop to create the final image. By Grant Hutchison, Durban. Canon 11-24mm, ISO 100, f/7.1, 10 min.
