Attack of the killer lunch

Posted on 10 February 2010

I came upon these guys en route to Vermaaklikheid, yes there is a town by the name of ‘joyfulness’, but more about the town later. Knowing that I’d come across these stupid birds in Oudtshoorn, sorry ostrich lovers, I thought I’d just shoot them anyway because the light was beautiful. I kept my distance at first but as I got more and more involved in the scene I edged closer and closer to the fence. Any photographer will tell you that one gets really involved in what’s happening in that little frame when you have your eye pressed up to it. When I looked up from the camera the five or six birds that were at the fence when I arrived had quietly multiplied and there was literally a herd (they can’t fly and they are farmed in paddocks, I refuse to call it a flock, sorry, it’s a herd). Grateful for the willing subjects, I proceeded to shoot. And then, suddenly that little frame went black and my lens shade fell off. They were attacking! I’m not sure I like these birds so much anymore, unless they come medium-rare with a side order of fries, a good sauce and a beer.
