One up on Robinson Crusoe at Mnemba Island Lodge

Posted on 26 May 2011

No shoes, no phones, no people, no worries. You honestly feel like you have just washed up on shore on a desert island in the middle of nowhere. These are a few of the things you can expect on Mnemba Island Lodge just off Zanzibar. Apart from another (at the most) 12 other people on the island, it is all yours to explore and enjoy.

Mnemba island lodge is unlike anywhere I have been. If you can imagine a palace on an island, this is it. The food is unreal, the hospitality is refreshing and on top of all of that you feel like you are on your own private island in the middle of nowhere. The rooms are positioned in a way that you cannot see or hear any of the other guests – they are spread around the perimetre of the island to give absolute privacy. One of my favourite things about the island was the feeling you get of just living and being there in the moment. There is nothing around to bother you and the staff of Mnemba Island Lodge make very sure that it stays that way.

Activities are endless, from swimming with dolphins to the exquisite diving around the atoll which is home to some of the most beautiful fish species in the world. Instead of game drives twice a day at the other andBeyond lodges they have changed it to diving twice a day around the island -which works incredibly well because all you want to do is be in the water.

If you’re in the mood for some barefoot luxury, a clear mind and incredible scenery wherever you look, I suggest you book a seat on the next faulty ship or boat that happens to pass by this tiny little island.
