The Apostles Braai: A luxurious take on a South African pastime

Posted by David Henning on 26 October 2021

Elegance and class have always been the virtues of the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, often viewed as a benchmark in the hotel world. Well, now the hotel has added another feature to their arsenal, a new restaurant called Apostles Braai.

This is a fresh, new and stylish twist to a South African heritage, that still serves the classic braaibroodjies, but you won’t spend the night here getting boisterous on brandy and coke. The Apostles Braai is a classy affair.

Situated on the slopes of the Table Mountain Nature Reserve, the restaurant is located within pristine fynbos that you have to walk through to get to the timber deck.

The glass enclosure gives you some protection from the elements while keeping the spectacular views of mountain, sea and sunset views. The Twelve Apostles is also home to the Gin Lab, meaning that divine cocktails are a must on a hot day, often infused with the surrounding flora.

The menu is curated by the hotel’s chef, Christo Pretorius, who loves his braai. You can tell he put a lot of thought into his menu, wanting to keep the classics, like braaibroodjies, but also serve up grilled vegetables, vegetarian burgers and a good old steak.

After helping yourself to the food, it will come as a relief that you can walk it all off on the hotel’s property. With a 3 km trail leading directly from the hotel to the Table Mountain National Park, visiting Apostles Braai is a day well spent.

There are plenty of other options available, where picnics can be ordered and you can find your perfect spot along one of their trails. If that’s still not to your taste, you can dine down at their restaurant Azure, with a deck that’s one of the prime sunset spots in Cape Town.

If you worried about having to drive through the busy streets of the city and up the steep Kloof Nek road, The Twelve Apostles has the option of taking a helicopter ride from the V&A waterfront with NAC Helicopters, allowing you to enjoy more than one G&T, as they will also drive you back.
