7 wildly unique and romantic Airbnb stays

Posted by Anita Froneman on 16 November 2021

There’s nothing better than a spontaneous romantic getaway with your loved one to revive the soul. The Western Cape has ample secluded spots that are ideal for couples, set in some of the most scenic parts of the world. We’ve scoured Airbnb to find the most beautiful, off-the-beaten-track stays in nature that will fan the flame of romance.

1. Forest dome, Storms River

This fully transparent dome in the Tsitsikamma forest is a stargazer’s dream. Not only is it tucked away in the trees with an ocean view, there’s also an oak wine barrel hot tub to soak in. We can’t imagine anything better.

Rates: R3,900 per night

2. Eco-treehouse, Swellendam

Fully equipped, this luxury self-catering cabin is a gorgeous hideaway and is completely off the grid. Gas fuels the hot water and stove, while the lights and appliances run on solar energy. Near this wooden cabin in the Langeberg mountains, where you wake up to a tranquil pond and open fields, there are plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails, a dam to swim in and horses to ride. The house is situated on the edge of Marloth Nature Reserve.

Rates: R1,636 per night

3. Earth house, Botrivier

Called ‘Hobbit Hollow’ on Airbnb, this house truly is like something out of a fantasy film. Built into the banks of the Botrivier, the cottage is obscured from the main farm as the grass-covered roof is level with the upper farmland. Explore the olive grove or vineyards, or simply wade in the bubbling stream all day long.

Rates: R1,514 per night

4. Camper van, Wilderness

‘Rustic, down to earth glamping in the heart of Wilderness heights,’ says the Airbnb profile, and that’s exactly what it is. This little off-the-grid nook is cosy and the best part is the bedroom – a transformed Volkswagen Kombi van. From the wooden deck, you can watch the sunset or enjoy the scenery. The outside shower and hammock complete the hippy-esque vibe.

Rates: R529 per night

5. Canvas tent, Garden Route National Park

This Airbnb consists of three canvas bell tents about 80m from each other in the idyllic South Cape forest with a communal outdoor kitchen in the middle. Here, you can indulge in the forest shower, appreciate the views of the mountains and valley, enjoy the free-to-use yoga mats or reading material for a tranquil retreat.

Rates: R1,100 per night

6. Old wine cellar, Robertson

You might have been inside a wine cellar before, but have you ever slept in one? This renovated wine cellar on a flower farm is the epitome of charm. Tastefully equipped, the bedroom is in the loft and the living area on the ground floor overlooks a marvellous plunge pool and vineyards. Not to worry, there is still plenty of wine to go around in the private tasting room too.

7. Eco-pod, Stormsvlei

On the banks of the Riviersonderend near Bonnievale, this luxury eco-friendly wooden pod is the ultimate private escape. Situated in Melozhori Private Game Reserve, you might wake up to the sight of various buck or giraffes grazing below your deck. This quaint spot features a hot tub, fireplace and uninterrupted stargazing.
