Five reasons why San Lameer is an awesome vacation spot

Posted on 30 August 2013

Ever been to the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast in summer? Even if you haven’t, you’ll know by its reputation that the towns along this renowned coast burst with holiday goers every year. It’s a place where South Africans love to relax, let the kids play and enjoy the sun and warm waters of the Indian Ocean (not sounding familiar? Read this guide to Kwa-Zulu Natal’s South Coast.)

San Lameer has been there to see most of the development happen. As the first golfing estate in South Africa, these folks really know what they’re doing. And don’t worry; you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy a relaxing holiday here. In fact, you don’t even have to wait for summer. There’s loads to keep the entire family busy at this prime location on the beach (for more inspiration, check out these top 10 South African beaches.)

Five reasons why San Lameer is an awesome vacation spot

1. It’s literally on the beach

The estate has direct access to two blue flag beaches. You walk down, through the gate and you’re onto a rather impressive expanse of white sand. In summer, you don’t have to worry about the kids getting lost in the crowds because they can simply walk back through the gate and to your accommodation in the estate – safe and sound. In winter, you’ll have the beach almost entirely to yourself.

2. It’s also a conservancy

The estate boasts a 169-hectare conservation area and it’s incorporated into green belts that run through the entire estate. There are 195 different bird species, but the one that struck me as the most special was the pair of crowned eagle that live and nest in one of the trees as you drive in. These eagles are particularly rare and the estate’s local animal guru, Jacques, keeps a constant eye on them. They breed once a year, producing a beautiful baby.

3. You can play golf all day

Golf lovers will have the time of their lives with a rather challenging 18-hole championship course. Beginners and those just playing for fun can enjoy the 9-hole Pitch & Putt course. It’s never too late to try your hand at golf!

4. Accommodation for all tastes

The flats and villas inside the estate are privately owned, but thanks to the estate’s very own letting agency on the premises, you can easily book a stay at one of these for a weekend or a few days. The villas vary in size and trail all the way up against a hill, so the views tend to be good wherever you find yourself. Some even have a rim-flow swimming pool from which you can look out over the green belts and the sea in the distance.

5. You don’t have to go to the shops

Going to the shops may not sound like a very laborious task, but in summer especially, you would want to avoid the KwaZulu-Natal coastal roads as much as possible – if you want to maintain a steady heart rate, that is. San Lameer has a small shop on site, but you don’t even have to walk here. You can send through your shopping list before you arrive and they will get everything you need (even if the shop doesn’t have it in stock) and deliver it to your villa on the day that you arrive. Now that’s what I call convenience.

If this is still too much trouble, then treat yourself to lunch at the hotel restaurant. You won’t regret it.
