8 ways to spend the long weekend in August

Posted on 17 July 2012

We’re all for public holidays and there’s one coming your way. Women’s Day is going to be celebrated on the 9th August 2012, which means that a well-deserved, treat-yourself-session is hopefully in store for all the woman out there. Better yet, you can make a long weekend out it. I’m pretty sure that our ever-faithful SABC 1, 2 and 3 will be broadcasting chick flicks the whole weekend, but I’m going to give you some good reasons why you don’t have to be a couch potato and spend your time at home this Women’s Day weekend. Whether it’s wine tasting in the winelands or a spa treatment at a wellness centre, make sure you are at the top of the list.

1. A foodie and wine weekend

How about a weekend away indulging in food and wine? There are several great foodie festivals taking place over the Women’s Day long weekend, including the Robertson Slow 2012 and the Hermanus Wine and Food Fair. Taking place in the heart of wine country, there will be plenty of opportunity to crack open several bottles of wine and taste the top-notch wines on offer.

Robertson Slow 2012

The Robertson Slow 2012, taking place from 10-12 August, will place you slap-bang in the middle of the Robertson Wine Valley where they have a wonderful health philosophy: slowly made, slowly enjoyed. You can experience true country life for a weekend, with food and wine the focus, by learning how to blend your own wine, making your own honey, taking a fynbos drive or even enjoying an evening of story-telling. Don’t let the ‘slow’ in the Robertson Slow Festival delay you in getting to this foodie festival. Prices vary according to the programme you choose.
