If there ever was a time to be happy you’re a South African, it’s next week. Between 10 and 14 September, South Africans will have free access to almost all of the SANParks National Parks in celebration of SA National Parks Week.

The reasoning behind it is as simple as encouraging South Africans to visit their local national parks and appreciate the natural surroundings that are lurking much closer than we may sometimes think.

The only two parks not included in the free entry is Boulders in Table Mountain National Park and the Namaqua National Park. Table Mountain National Park (excluding Boulders) is extending SA National Parks week until Saturday 15 September 2012 whilst Tankwa National Park and Bontebok National Park are extending the week to Sunday 16 September 2012.

All you need to take with you is your South African ID document and comfortable shoes, because the moment you arrive, you’ll definitely be inspired to go hiking. And seeing as spring has arrived, there really is no excuse not to make the outing. So convince your colleagues that a sunny afternoon picnic also counts as ‘team building’ and make your way to your nearest national park.

Visit www.sanparks.org for the full list of participating parks.

If you live in Cape Town, click here formore affordable spring weekend breaks and perhaps you can even combine the two.

I think that its great to encourage SA citizens to visit the parks, but the timing is really off with people at work and kids in school.
