The photo boat rocks on

Posted on 23 July 2010

In the August issue of Getaway I wrote a story about Lou and Veronica Coetzer’s amazing photographic safari that I had the priviledge of attending in Botswana called ‘Rocking the photographic boat’. I wasn’t the only one blown away by the experience. I asked David (who’s shot of the trip fish eagle appered in the story) and his wife Sue Wright what previous photographic experience they had, and what they thought about the trip. I’ve also posted some more pics of theirs here.

Here’s David talking about his experience:

Our professions: Sue is a Home ‘Exec’ and myself an entrepreneur; our previous photographic experience is fairly limited. We’ve did one (rather disappointing) photo excursion to the Masai Mara a few years ago. Also some time ago, we both did a basic introductory photographic course (6 weeks, once a week) that’s it.

Sue and I were a bit apprehensive to start with, a little unsure if we would be out of our depth doing a trip with 2 seasoned professionals like Lou and Veronica. They were very quick to put us at ease, and from the first outing, Lou helped me with settings, camera work and all the guidance that I needed whilst Veronica took Sue under her wing to do the same (and they kept doing this all week , never losing patience..!) Not only did Veronica help Sue take great wildlife pics, she did the same for her with landscapes as well.

We were very pleasantly surprised to see that Nikon had provided us with all the camera bodies and lenses that we needed, all we had to provide was our memory cards, laptops and the very easy to use Nikon NX2 program. This trip would just not have been the same without access to all of this equipment.
The Chobe River provides a world of magnificent photographic opportunities and on every outing, morning or afternoon we got something new and exciting. One morning great sightings of fish eagles and birdlife, in the afternoons elephants having fun in the river, and buffalos crossing the river – all in one day.

This was a great trip, the Chobe provides fantastic wildlife and bird sightings, Nikon provided great equipment, and Lou and Veronica a wonderful photographic education.
