Are you feeding your dog for the active life it leads?

Posted on 26 October 2026 By Lee-Ann Steyn

At the first rattle of a lead, your dog is already at the door. Whether the plan is a dawn run along the beach, a winding mountain trail or a weekend camping trip, your dog knows the drill and enthusiasm is not in short supply. For dog-loving South Africans, outdoor adventures are often shared adventures.

Our dogs explore the same coastlines, forests, paths and open spaces that we do, usually with more energy and considerably less
concern about the weather. We think carefully about the gear required for these outings. We pack water, check the route and consider
the heat. Yet one of the most important parts of an active dog’s preparation happens at home, every day: what goes into its bowl.

Different dogs, different adventures

Being active does not mean the same thing for every dog. One may bound through soft sand every morning, while another takes a measured approach to the neighbourhood greenbelt. A young, energetic dog regularly tackling longer routes will not necessarily have the same nutritional requirements as an older companion enjoying slower weekend walks. Age, breed, weight, body condition, life stage, activity level, sensitivities and health goals can all influence what a dog should eat and how much it needs.

This makes the usual one-size-fits-all approach to feeding difficult. Pet stores tend to organise dogs into broad categories such as puppy, adult, senior or breed size, and while those categories are useful, but they don’t cater for the real differences between individual dogs and their lifestyles.

Starting with the dog, not the bag

BuddyMeal was developed around a simple idea: instead of starting with a generic bag of food, start with the dog. This local pet-nutrition business provides personalised dry dog food, precise daily portions and free nationwide delivery. Owners complete an online questionnaire covering their dog’s breed, age, weight, body condition, life stage, activity level, food sensitivities, health concerns and nutritional goals.

BuddyMeal’s nutrition algorithm uses that information to determine the appropriate food composition and precise daily portioning. For households with more than one dog, that distinction matters. Your active Jack Russell, ageing Schnauzer, or growing puppy may all share the same family and outdoor excursions, but they do not necessarily have the same dietary requirements.

Fuel without guesswork

An active lifestyle does not simply mean filling the bowl more generously. Overfeeding can contribute to excess weight, while feeding too little may not meet your dog’s daily energy expenditure. BuddyMeal incorporates these factors into its feeding guidelines. Dogs that are overweight receive portion guidelines intended to support gradual progress towards a healthier weight. Dogs already at a healthy weight receive portions designed to help maintain an appropriate body condition.

The profile can also be updated. When a puppy reaches adulthood, or when your dog’s weight changes or its activity level increases or decreases, the feeding recommendation can be adjusted accordingly. This means the plan can evolve rather than remaining fixed throughout the dog’s life.

BuddyMeal’s recipes contain an average of 28% to 34% protein, compared with a maximum range of 20% to 28% found in other premium pet food brands. But protein is only one part of the nutritional picture. The aim is a complete, balanced formulation that matches the individual dog’s age, weight, body condition, activity level and nutritional needs. BuddyMeal food is gluten-free, soy-free, maize-free and wheat-free as standard. Grain-free and chicken-free options are also available
for dogs with different dietary requirements.

Local production with quality in mind

Approximately 75% of BuddyMeal’s ingredients are sourced in South Africa, supporting local suppliers wherever possible. Selected raw ingredients are sourced internationally where they offer superior quality or better meet BuddyMeal’s specifications.

Every dry food order is produced and prepared, weighed, portioned, labelled and packed at the company’s facility in the Western Cape, in resealable bags branded with your dog’s name and individual feeding instructions. Quality and safety measures include regular laboratory testing, HACCP food-safety controls and batch traceability. The food is formulated to FEDIAF nutritional guidelines for complete and balanced pet nutrition, and every meal-plan combination is reviewed and confirmed by a certified animal nutritionist before being supplied.

The recurring-delivery model adds another practical benefit. Food is delivered according to the dog’s feeding requirements, removing the panic of that last-minute rush to restock.

Ready for the next trail

Good adventures require more than enthusiasm. They depend on preparation, consistency and knowing the capabilities of your companion. The same principle applies to feeding. Personalised nutrition is not simply a dog’s name printed on a bag; it is an approach that considers your individual dog, your ‘best friend’.

So, before the next beach run, mountain climb or weekend escape, it may be worth asking: does your dog’s everyday food match the
life you enjoy together?
