Introducing Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp

Posted on 1 August 2023 By Lauren Dold

The Kruger National Park needs no introduction. As one of Africa’s largest and most prestigious wildlife reserves, it draws visitors from across the globe with its diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity. People love it for its nostalgic same-old same-old dependability; so it’s exceptionally exciting when something new opens.

Just 15km north of Tshokwane, the newly opened Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp is strategically positioned to provide a gateway to this untamed wilderness. Set along the banks of the meandering Ripape riverbed, the camp boasts breathtaking views that will leave you awe-struck from the moment you arrive.

Guests park at a parking space near Tshokwane picnic site, before being transferred in an open safari vehicle to the camp, so the game drive begins the moment you arrive.

Luxurious Safari Accommodations

Arriving at Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp, guests are welcomed by a seamless blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. The accommodations here are designed to complement the natural surroundings while providing maximum comfort and convenience.

Set beneath towering jackalberry and apple leaf trees, 30 beautifully appointed safari tents hug the riverbed, each unit a private oasis where you can unwind after an exciting day of game drives.

There is ample seating in the main area, with a number of private lounges and fireplace set-ups for smaller groups to gather around.

A seasonal safari camp

Exclusive and one-of-a-kind, Tshokwane River Camp only operates in the winter months before being packed away in the summer, allowing the bushveld to recover during the rainy season. Not a trace of the camp is left behind; until the following year when the camp will be set up again for the winter season.

Up-Close Wildlife Encounters

What sets Tshokwane River Camp apart is its prime location in the heart of Kruger National Park’s wildlife-rich southern region, known for its high population density of lion and buffalo. The camp’s seasoned guides lead early morning and late afternoon game drives, ensuring guests witness the park’s inhabitants at their most active. The camp has a low, unobtrusive fence around it, allowing for a feeling of total immersion. All along the riverbed, it’s possible to have wildlife grazing, browsing or prowling just a few metres from your tent.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

For avid birdwatchers, this camp is nothing short of paradise. With over 500 bird species recorded in Kruger National Park, the area around Tshokwane River Camp serves as a haven for seasoned and amateur birders. Bring your binoculars and camp out on the comfy bean bags set out under the shade in the riverbed and tick bird after bird off your list.

Bush dining

Kruger Untamed: Tshokwane River Camp goes above and beyond when it comes to the culinary offering, so far removed from the usual Kruger affair. We enjoyed a starter of vegetable soup served hot around the fire in the riverbed, before moving to the dining area to tuck into perfectly cooked fillet steak, pap and sheba and an assortment of green salads.

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a meal under the stars, as the night chorus of whooping hyenas and trilling scops owls begins.
