The iconic Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, perched at the southernmost tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, is once again welcoming visitors.

The lighthouse was forced to close in August 2024 after being struck by lightning, which caused significant damage to the structure. For nearly a year, visitors could only admire it from the outside while repair and restoration work was carried out.

Now after a month-long closure from 1 to 29 August 2025 to complete the final phase of restoration, the red-and-white beacon will officially be open to visitors again. Managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) with the support of the Transnet National Ports Authority, the project focused on preserving the lighthouse’s integrity while ensuring it remains safe for the thousands of travelers who come here each year.

For visitors, this means the chance to once more climb the 27-metre tower for panoramic views of the rugged coastline, explore the small museum house in the keeper’s cottage, and stand at the symbolic meeting point of two oceans.

The reopening is perfectly timed for the warmer months ahead, making Cape Agulhas a must-stop destination for holidaymakers exploring the Western Cape. Whether you’re drawn by the thrill of standing at Africa’s southern tip, the photo-worthy views, or the charm of this maritime landmark, the return of the lighthouse adds another reason to head south this spring. For further updates or enquiries, travelers are advised to contact the Agulhas National Park office.
