Bontle Ndhlovu has set the bar high for aspiring nature writers across South Africa by publishing her first book at only eight years old. Encouraged by family members to pursue her dreams, Bontle published ‘The Oceanic Oxy Rescue Mission’ in 2021.

For her book, she inspiration from a children’s show called ‘Octonauts’ in which sea creatures are rescued and the ocean is protected.

The ‘Oceanic Oxy Rescue Mission’ tells the story of a little girl and her family who are attacked by three sharks while on a boat ride. Oxy and the dolphins come to the family’s rescue. Through this, Bontle defeats the idea held by many young children that sea creatures are scary, and instead displays them as caring creatures who need protection.

In addition to advocating for the protection of marine life, Bontle spreads her knowledge in the book using some fun, educational activities at the end of the book. She is already working on her next book in the ‘Adventures with Bontle’-series

‘Kids with big dreams should not be scared to chase them,’ Bontle said. ‘If you work hard, you can do whatever you want. Adults must also follow their dreams and must never give up.’
