Strange-looking fish washes up on Melkbosstrand

A very odd-looking fish washed up on Melkbosstrand on Friday, 24 March. Images of the interesting creature were shared on social media by Jean le Roux over the weekend.

Pictures show a fish small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, with red scales, and a terrifying jawline.

The fish is thought to be a red rocksucker that apparently looks rather cut when alive and in its natural habitat.

They are native to African waters, often seen in tidal pools between the Namibian coast and northern KwaZulu Natal.

When they wash up on beaches, an occasional occurrence, the sun causes their skin to shrink and their lips to move back enough to expose their jawline. The dead fish then end up looking like the images that le Roux shared.
