Getaway‘s special Kruger issue features the late ‘Stompie’, who used to roam about the Greater Kruger region, near Hoedspruit.

‘He was an absolutely incredible mature male rhino who frequented the areas around the Southern parts of the famous Sabi Sand Game Reserve,’ say Cameron Scott, the photographer who captured him.
Stompie is so named because an animal attacked him and left him without a tail and a kind of stump or ‘stompie’ instead. He was taken in by the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre where he was looked after and could roam about with his pal Balu.
‘He sired many new generations of Rhino in the area and provided endless game viewing for guests from all corners of the globe. His territory included the Kruger National Park which he often visited when crossing the Sabi River near Paul Kruger gate.’
‘This was the last image ever captured of him as we found him poached the following week,’ said Scott. ‘I promised that this image would be spread around in an attempt to raise awareness for the decline in our Rhino populations and to continue the amazing legacy that is and will always be Stompie.’
