Posted on 22 February 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

Travelling solo is a great way to pour into self. It also leads to personal growth and increased confidence. However, being alone at an unfamiliar destination also comes with a number of safety concerns. As such, ensuring that you are safe is extremely important.

Conduct safety research

When travelling solo, research is key. When doing your research about the safety of an area, you will learn about your destination’s safest neighborhoods, as well as areas to avoid. Once you have the information at your disposal, learn the safest routes and take the safest form of public transport.

Share your travel plans

It is important to share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member. Information shared can include your travel itinerary, hotel reservation information and details of any planned activities. Moreover, ensure that you remain connected with at least one person back home throughout your trip.

Take precautionary measures

As much as possible, use common sense and avoid reckless behaviour. This will ensure that you are safe at all times. For example, do not overindulge in alcohol and always ensure that your drinks are in your line of sight. Additionally, avoid going anywhere with strangers.

Have an emergency plan

Although it is good to always hope for the best possible outcome, knowing that unfortunate events are a possibility is also important.

It is helpful to know where to turn and what to do when an unfortunate event takes place. Research nearby hospitals, police stations and other emergency facilities before you travel. This way, you will know what to do as a solo traveller should you face an emergency situation.

Protect your valuables

Always keep your valuables safe. Avoid walking with your cellphone out (or any gadget) on busy city streets. Moreover, refrain from showing off your expensive jewellery in spaces that are unsafe as this may easily make you a target. Rather, keep your valuables concealed while you are out exploring or simply leave them at home.
