Roads flooded in the Western Cape

Posted on 13 December 2022 By Jordyn Johnson

As heavy rainfall and flooding continue throughout the Western Cape, and other parts of the country, Suburban Control Centre on Facebook shared a video of a car driving across the flooded R44 Route in Gordons Bay.

The comments section on the video is filled with concerned viewers, all suggesting that the driver should have stopped driving, or reversed to have found a safer route.

Cape Town Etc reported that the unusual ‘current combination’ of long rain showers, thunderstorms, and heavy winds ‘poses risks of flash flooding of roadways and at-risk informal settlements and damaging or collapsing trees and power lines.’

Up to 60 mm of rainfall was measured in some parts of the Western Cape on Monday, 12 December, reports IOL.

The South African Weather Service warns that heavy rain should continue into Tuesday, 13 December.

The public is advised to drive carefully and take an alternative route if roadways are flooded.
