Pedal2Peak meets Throttle2Bottle

Posted on 11 May 2009

We stopped for a cold coke in the heat of the day. It was going to be a quick stop as the masses of inquisitive kids started buzzing around us while we sipped down. It only takes one clever kid to shout “Swweeet!”

You are suddenly plagued with hands and a chorus of laughing and shouting. In came the cavalry. Two BMW 1150 motorcycles loaded with panniers and spare tyres.

The kids scatter and we are bewildered when one gets off the flashy yellow one.

He walks up to us, head shaking and smiling. Erol introduces himself and Oost. We exchanged our stories over banana and peanut butter rolls and insisted we would catch them in Vilanculos.

The following day we rolled into Vilanculos just on noon. We passed the campsite and noticed the flashy yellow BMW. We set up camp.

We get chatting over a beer and find they are doing a tour through twelve countries and are blogging it as well.

The next day Erol and Oost took us for a ride and introduced us to the power of the combustion engine. We attempted to get renewals in our passports for another 30 days at Vilanculos airport, but unfortunately that can only be done at immigration in Inhambane, Chimoio or alternatively by exiting at a border post.

It was good to catch up with like minded people and in true South African style the boys from Throttle2Bottle and boys from Pedal2Peak had a braai and drank beer while poking fun at each others mode of transport.

Marc and I held our guns for our two stroke engines that ran on bananas, bread and water.

Who needs speed anyway when you semi-retired!

The next day we loaded the bikes knowing that we had the task of 500 km in just on six days. Erol and Oost left to and 30 kilometers outside Vilanculos we stopped for a naartjie, while our new friends called for a smoke break. We all said cheers and moved off further into our adventures.

Those BMW’s do sound better when you start pushing your pedals!
