While war zones may seem distant to South Africans planning their next getaway, tour operators say the perception of risk is influencing choices as far afield as Europe, Asia, and the Indian Ocean.

According to Travel News , “Clients are avoiding these war-zone countries and seeking reassurance we simply can’t provide,” says Hope Kistan of Journeys With Hope. The uncertainty isn’t just about destinations directly in the line of conflict—media coverage and regional instability are affecting perceptions across entire areas, including otherwise safe countries.
Tammy Wright, Sales and Product Manager at Dream Kist Tours, explains: “Many travellers view a region as a whole. Even if your destination is stable, headlines about conflict nearby can create hesitation.”
Key concerns include airspace disruptions, escalation risk, safety perception, and travel logistics such as insurance and cancellation policies.
Safer options gaining popularity
In response, tour operators are pivoting. European cities, Canada, Australia, India, and the Far East remain strong alternatives. Kistan recommends the Indian Ocean Islands, Mediterranean cruises, and other destinations perceived as low-risk.
Clients who postpone trips often request that airlines or operators hold funds, showing optimism for future travel rather than outright cancellations.
Airlines and regulators proceed with caution
Flights into or over affected areas are carefully managed. Hanry Bakr, Senior President of Aviation & Maritime Security at MedAire, notes: “Airlines and civil aviation regulators will only resume services once threat levels stabilise, airspace restrictions ease, and contingency measures are in place. Travel will remain dynamic, with potential for cancellations and enhanced security checks.”
Travel advisory group International SOS encourages travellers to minimise time near military or diplomatic sites, follow verified sources for updates, adhere to local directives, and avoid sharing unverified information.
Industry resilience shines through
Despite the uncertainty, the travel sector remains adaptable. Wright emphasises, “Partnerships between suppliers, operators, and agents are key. Collaboration ensures the industry can respond to uncertainty and continue supporting travellers.”
Kistan also praises airline flexibility, noting that rebooking support has been crucial in keeping plans fluid and travellers confident.
In a world where headlines often fuel fear, South African travellers are finding that careful planning, flexible bookings, and alternative destinations can help keep holiday dreams alive—even when conflict dominates the news cycle.
