Planning a trip up Table Mountain over the next two weeks? You’ll need to swap the cable car for your hiking boots.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has officially suspended operations for its annual maintenance shutdown, with the popular attraction closed from 27 July to 9 August 2026.
The planned closure allows technical teams to carry out essential inspections, servicing and safety checks that can’t be completed while the cable cars are transporting visitors. The work forms part of the Cableway Company’s yearly maintenance programme, helping to keep one of Cape Town’s most iconic attractions running safely and reliably.
“Safety and reliability are daily responsibilities at the Cableway Company, and the annual shutdown is a critical part of that work,” said Managing Director Wahida Parker. She explained that while the journey to the summit takes only a few minutes, it’s supported by a highly complex transport system that requires regular maintenance and expert oversight.
What’s happening during the shutdown?
Each year, different parts of the cableway system are serviced according to scheduled maintenance cycles. This year’s programme includes routine inspections as well as specialised work carried out with technical experts from Doppelmayr Garaventa, who are also providing practical training for local technicians.
According to Parker, the temporary closure is carefully built into the annual operating calendar to ensure the long-term safety and quality of the visitor experience.
Can you still visit Table Mountain?
Yes, but you’ll need to hike. While the cable cars are out of service, all hiking trails on Table Mountain remain open, meaning visitors can still reach the summit on foot. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to hike back down, as there will be no cable car operating in either direction.
The Upper Cable Station and all visitor facilities at the top, including restaurants, retail shops and cloakrooms, will remain closed throughout the maintenance period. At the Lower Cable Station, only Vida e Caffè and the public toilets will stay open. The shuttle bus that normally runs between Kloof Nek and the Lower Station has also been suspended for the duration of the shutdown.
Hiking safely during the closure
If you’re planning to tackle Table Mountain while the cableway is closed, it’s worth preparing properly. Before setting off:
- Check the weather forecast before you leave.
- Choose a hiking route that matches your fitness level and experience.
- Wear sturdy shoes and dress for changing mountain weather.
- Pack plenty of water and snacks.
- Avoid hiking alone where possible and let someone know your plans.
The annual maintenance shutdown is scheduled to end on 9 August 2026, when cable car operations are expected to resume.
