Electronic music, mountain scenery and riverside relaxation will once again come together at Wolfkop Weekender, which has announced its first artists for the January 2027 edition. International acts Deer Jade, Parallele, Un*Deux and Fabian Krooss lead the initial announcement, with more local artists and festival experiences still to be revealed.
Set in the Cederberg mountains, Wolfkop offers an alternative to the conventional music festival. Alongside its carefully curated electronic music programme, the event encourages guests to spend time outdoors, swim in the river, share meals with friends and dance beneath the stars.
The five-day gathering is designed around connection, with space for both lively dancefloor sessions and slower moments in nature. Guests can experience the festival at their own pace, balancing music and socialising with opportunities to unwind in the surrounding landscape.
From a gathering of friends to a festival community
Wolfkop began in December 2012 as an intimate gathering of just 60 friends. Founded by Werner Röntgen, it has since developed into a destination for festivalgoers seeking a more immersive experience, where the setting and sense of community are as important as the music.
“We’ve shown that a festival can run without sponsorship and brand names scattered all over the site and that it’s about more than music,” says Röntgen. “It’s the river, mountains, food, accommodation, activities and, most importantly, the feeling of being part of a collective.”
This approach remains central to the 2027 edition. The organisers are continuing to prioritise a carefully selected music programme, wellbeing and the freedom for visitors to shape their own festival experience.
More artists and activities are expected to be announced in the coming months. Organisers are also exploring new spaces and unexpected experiences for 2027, giving returning guests and first-time visitors opportunities to discover more of what the festival has to offer.
Sustainability and community at the heart of Wolfkop
Beyond its music programme, Wolfkop Weekender aims to protect the natural environment that gives the festival its distinctive character. Supporting small businesses and promoting upliftment, diversity and inclusion are also part of its broader vision.
The festival’s journey has included significant challenges, from the COVID-19 pandemic to three major floods. The continued support of its community and partners has helped it recover and evolve through these setbacks.
For Röntgen, the festival’s long-term value lies in the experiences people take home rather than the number of people attending.
“I hope they remember new connections, a sense of release and moments such as swimming in the river, dancing barefoot, meeting lifelong friends, waking up among the Cederberg mountains or sharing a meal around a fire.”
With Wolfkop Weekender returning from 14 to 18 January 2027, festivalgoers can look forward to five days of electronic music, outdoor adventures and shared experiences in the Cederberg. For those seeking a summer escape that combines music with nature and community, the festival offers a different way to experience South Africa’s festival season.
