The Maqam Echahid, also known as the Martyrs’ Memorial, is one of Algeria’s most recognisable landmarks. The concrete monument commemorates the Algerian War and was opened in 1982. It consists of three massive concrete palm leaves, with a statue of a soldier under each palm representing different stages of Algeria’s struggle for independence.

The Sahara desert is the ideal destination for adventure seekers, and it covers much of southern Algeria. It is the place to be if you would like to enjoy some camel treks, explore ancient rock art sites or simply experience the traditional Bedouin culture.

If you are a foodie, Algeria has a number of exciting experiences for your tastebuds. Algerian cuisine is a scrumptious blend of Mediterranean and North African flavours. There are also some influences of French and Arabic cuisine. Some dishes worth trying when visiting Algeria include merguez, which is a spicy lamb or beef sausage, as well as makroudh which is pastry made with semolina and dates.
