Spier’s new ‘Good Natured’ organic range is a testament to nature

Posted on 21 October 2022 By David Henning

Spier is once again setting the benchmark in South Africa with its organic and biodynamic approach to farming with the launch of its Good Natured organic wine range.

For the launch, a table was set between the indigenous fynbos and organic vineyards and served with food coming from the farm’s organic vegetable garden and a fynbos harvest table to make your own bouquet and wreath – the perfect homage to the Good Natured range.

Spier’s Organic winemaker, Tania Kleintjes said that the new range epitomised the farm’s organic approach. ‘I believe the winemaking process should involve as little interference as possible,’ she said ‘The less we fiddle with nature, the better the results. When nature is in a good place, so is everything. Wine included.’

The result? A wine range that embodies Spier’s multifaceted regenerative philosophy—and is an example of how regenerative viticulture can create vibrant, flavorful wines.

Each of the four wines – two whites and two reds – is made with fruit grown in organic vineyards free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. Instead, nature is invited back into the vineyard to encourage a diverse ecosystem of plants, insects, and microorganisms to thrive.

In the winter, oat, mustard and clover seeds are planted for cover crops to germinate and add nutrition to the soil. Bees, bugs and birds act as welcome pest control and by the time harvest rolls around, the team handpick vines and returns as much back to the earth for composting or recycling.

The range can be bought in a box set with a thank you to nature inscribed on the box: ‘Thanks birds, goggas, trees. rain, sun and soil’ as a thoughtful reminder that this wine was made in collaboration with nature.

To celebrate the arrival of the Good Natured range, the Spier Tasting Room has launched an Organic Wine Tasting. Until 31 October, visitors can enjoy four delicious, freshly-prepared vegetarian bites paired with four exceptional organic wines, including the new Good Natured Organic Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon.
