A fire broke out at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park on Thursday night, 24 September, destroying two tourist accommodation units.

The blaze was reported at the northern Kruger camp and was quickly contained by camp staff and the ranger team before it could spread to surrounding buildings. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
For a camp surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of the bush, a fire after dark is particularly unsettling. Fortunately, the response was swift enough to prevent the incident from becoming more serious.
According to SANParks, only two tourist units were affected. The rest of Letaba’s facilities, including the park shop, filling station, Elephant Hall and reception, remain operational.
The affected chalets had also recently been renovated after suffering damage during floods earlier this year. Local reports say the units were not currently in use and were still undergoing renovation when the fire occurred.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. SANParks says an investigation is under way and that further information will be provided once it becomes available.
Letaba is one of Kruger’s main rest camps and sits along the Letaba River, an area known for it’s elephants and wide Lowveld landscapes. For visitors, it’s about settling into the slower rhythm of the bush: an early morning drive, an afternoon spent watching the river, or the quiet that arrives after sunset.
For now, that rhythm continues. While two accommodation units have been lost to the fire, the wider camp remains open and operational.
