New concept store for you and your furry companions opens in Cape Town

After serving its loyal clientele at the Oranjezicht market for over a decade now, Cape Town-based premium pet store brand Chommies will now be opening its concept store on Hatfield Street in Gardens.

The space

The name Chommies, a South African term for “friends”, encapsulates the joie de vivre of this premium brand, and their elegant refurbished heritage building serves as both a concept retail destination and an escapist city oasis.

Fans of Chommies’ colourful aesthetic have been ‘nudging them for new categories’, says creative director and founder Nathalie Klijn. ‘As we naturally evolve into more of a lifestyle brand that celebrates colour-happy contemporary design and artisanal luxuries made in South Africa, we wanted a feel-good, welcoming space that is a sensory experience for people and dogs alike, as well as one that gives us the opportunity to develop and showcase new products in the home, fashion and accessories.’

The House of Chommies boasts a secluded courtyard with dog-friendly benches and a water fountain that seconds as a dipping pond, with the garden that was originally designed by Cape Town landscaper Franchesca Watson. You can take a seat at bespoke café tables with custom beaded surfaces and original metal outdoor chairs inspired by Malawian basketry, both of which were developed specifically for this space. ‘We want our customers and their dogs to feel inspired but also at ease as if in their own home, helping them to unwind from today’s busy world,’ says Klijn.

Products for your furry chommie

The House of Chommies presents a vibrant array of collars, leashes and harnesses fit for every size and fur colour – and perfect for travel. All products are handmade locally in the Chommies workshop. Thanks to local artisans who form part of the Chommies’ team, traditional African craftsmanship such as whipping, weaving and macramé live on and are cleverly reimagined, whilst adding soul and story to each product. Customers can make an appointment to visit the workshop.

‘We believe in a luxury that can be enjoyed 24/7; from a glorious walk with your dog in the morning to striking products and designs that bring joy and ease to everyday life,’ concludes Kjin.

Their hands-free leashes are great for hitting the trails. Active adventurers can keep going full-speed while keeping their bestie close by.

One of their newest collections, “The fun-in-the-sun” is aptly dubbed “Clifton 1st”, after Clifton’s only dog-friendly beach. Delicately beaded, but not delicate, the collars are meant for dogs that roll around in the sand and catch waves as much as those that enjoy the vibey culture of the city.

Clifton during the summer perfectly encapsulates the feel-good essence of Cape Town lifestyle, set amidst the extraordinary surroundings most often enjoyed in the best of company,’ says Klijn.

In addition to collars, “Clifton 1st” offers corresponding beaded leashes in the same three colourways, designed to look good on all types of fur, male and female dogs – and all people. If a fur friend’s obliging human is of mind to play “match-match” even further, there are shimmery key rings and bracelet cuffs to complete the ensemble.

The “Clifton 1st” range is available from 1 December 2022 online at www.chommies.com and at The House of Chommies and Oranjezicht Market from 3 December.

Address: 110 Hatfield Street, Gardens, Cape Town.

The store is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.
