Kalk Bay has been named one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods for 2026 by Time Out, placing the small Cape Town seaside suburb alongside some of the world’s most talked-about urban districts.

The False Bay neighbourhood ranked 31st on Time Out’s annual list of 40 neighbourhoods across 26 countries and territories. Seoul’s Jongno 3-ga took the top spot, followed by Rabat’s L’Ocean District and Neos Kosmos in Athens.
For anyone who has spent a slow afternoon wandering Kalk Bay, the recognition feels easy to understand.
The neighbourhood has a particular rhythm. Fishing boats move through the harbour, trains run along the coastline and Victorian shopfronts house independent cafés, galleries, bookshops and vintage stores. Behind it all, the mountains rise sharply from the coast.
Time Out highlighted Kalk Bay’s mix of independent businesses, art, food and drink, as well as its coastal setting and bohemian character. Its recommended day includes a swim at Dalebrook Tidal Pool, coffee at Olympia Café, browsing Kalk Bay’s galleries and bookshops, lunch at Kalky’s and an evening of live music and theatre.
The list was compiled using nominations from Time Out’s global network of local editors and experts, with neighbourhoods assessed across areas including food and drink, culture, nightlife, independent businesses, community and liveability.
Kalk Bay’s appeal, though, has never really depended on a list.
It’s the kind of place where a quick coffee can turn into an afternoon by the sea, where you can browse old books before watching fishing boats return to the harbour, and where the mountains and ocean are always part of the view.
Now, that distinctly Cape Town combination has earned a place on the global stage.
