The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has begun its annual maintenance shutdown, with cable car operations suspended from 27 July until 9 August 2026. The popular attraction is expected to reopen on Monday, 10 August, weather permitting.

The planned two-week closure allows technical teams uninterrupted access to carry out essential inspections, servicing and preventative maintenance across the Cableway system. Much of this work cannot be completed while the cable cars are transporting visitors, making the annual shutdown a key part of maintaining safe and reliable operations.
According to TMACC Managing Director Wahida Parker, the maintenance period is about far more than routine checks.
“Safety and reliability are daily responsibilities at TMACC, and the annual shutdown is a critical part of that work,” she said.
“Visitors experience the Cableway as a short journey, but every trip is supported by a complex transport system, detailed planning and a skilled technical team.”
Specialist maintenance underway
The scope of the maintenance programme changes each year, with different components serviced according to their usage, condition and scheduled maintenance cycles.
This year’s programme includes technical inspections, equipment testing, routine servicing and preventative maintenance to ensure the Cableway continues operating efficiently.

As in previous years, specialists from Doppelmayr Garaventa, the international manufacturer behind the Cableway system, will work alongside TMACC’s technical team. The collaboration also provides valuable hands-on training and technical knowledge sharing during the shutdown.
Parker acknowledged that the temporary closure may disrupt some travel plans but said the dedicated maintenance period is essential for protecting both visitor safety and the long-term performance of the attraction.
What visitors should know
During the shutdown:
- No cable car trips will operate in either direction.
- The Upper Station, including restaurants, shops and visitor facilities, will remain closed.
- At the Lower Station, Vida e Caffè and the public toilets will stay open, while all other Cableway services will be unavailable.
- The shuttle bus between Kloof Nek and the Lower Station will not operate.
Hikers can still access the mountain
The closure does not affect hiking trails on Table Mountain, but hikers should remember that they will need to complete both the ascent and descent on foot, as the Cableway will not be available for the return journey.
TMACC advises hikers to check weather conditions and route information before setting out, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, carry enough water and food, and ensure they have a fully charged cellphone. Choosing a route suited to your fitness level and avoiding solo hikes wherever possible is also recommended.
The Table Mountain Cableway is scheduled to resume operations on 10 August 2026, subject to favourable weather conditions. Visitors are encouraged to check TMACC’s official website and social media channels for the latest operational updates before travelling.
