Typhoon Dujuan is approaching Tokyo, with authorities warning of potentially record-breaking rainfall, flooding and landslides.

As reported by IOL, at least 275 flights have been cancelled in Japan as Typhoon Dujuan moves towards Tokyo, with authorities warning that the storm could bring exceptionally heavy rainfall and dangerous conditions.
The typhoon has already disrupted transport and events across parts of Japan, while thousands of households have been left without electricity. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that rain and winds would strengthen ahead of the storm’s arrival.
Heavy rain expected around Tokyo
The JMA has warned that rainfall through Tuesday could reach levels rarely seen in the region. According to the agency, the accumulated rainfall could exceed the average rainfall normally recorded during the entire month of September, raising the possibility of record-breaking rain.
At the time of the latest reports, Typhoon Dujuan was producing winds of around 144km/h and was approximately 110km from Hachijojima, one of Tokyo’s outlying islands.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for heavy rainfall and landslides as the system approaches. More than 4 000 households in Chiba, neighbouring Tokyo, were without power on Monday.
Flights and trains affected
The storm has caused widespread disruption to air travel. Japan Airlines cancelled 120 domestic flights and 15 international flights, while All Nippon Airways cancelled 140 domestic flights.
Railway operators in Tokyo and surrounding areas have also suspended services on some routes, adding to travel disruptions caused by the weather.
For travellers currently in Japan, conditions and transport schedules may change quickly as the typhoon moves closer to the capital.
The weather has also affected major events in the region. Tokyo Game Show, one of the world’s largest video game trade fairs, was forced to close early on Monday, cancelling the final day of the event. The show had opened on Thursday.
A major outdoor music festival and a baseball game scheduled for Chiba were also cancelled as authorities prepared for worsening weather.
With Typhoon Dujuan continuing to approach the Tokyo region, residents and visitors have been warned to monitor official weather and transport updates as heavy rain and strong winds intensify.
