Following a period of essential maintenance and a major upgrade to a modern control system, the funicular is ready to welcome local and international travellers back to the Cape headland. The 585-meter journey ascends 87 meters, delivering passengers to the terraced viewing area overlooking the turquoise waters of Dias Beach, the historic lighthouse, and the endless expanse of the ocean. From the upper terrace, a scenic 114-step climb takes visitors to the very pinnacle of the point.

Named after the legendary ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman holds a distinctive place in South African engineering history. Opened originally in December 1996 as the first commercial funicular on the African continent, it was built using local innovations; most notably its unique tubular tracks, designed by South African inventor Peter Küsel.

Operating on a counterbalanced two-car system, each car accommodates 40 passengers. At full capacity, the funicular completes up to 240 trips daily, transporting roughly 378,000 visitors each year. Beyond its historical significance, the funicular is environmentally respectful; its modern magnetic drive system reduces energy consumption by 50% while ensuring a remarkably quiet ride to the top.

A visit to Cape Point offers more than just sweeping views. The surrounding nature reserve is home to rich biodiversity, where lucky visitors might spot cormorants nesting on the cliffs, peregrine falcons riding the thermals, dassies basking on the rocks, or humpback whales passing through the bay.

Celebrate Tourism Month at Cape Point – In celebration of Tourism Month this year, special promotional deals will run from 7 September to 4 October 2026:

  • Two Oceans Restaurant: 50% off a child’s meal with the purchase of an adult meal (children 12 and under).
  • Food & Beverage Takeaway Store: 50% off a child’s hot chocolate.
  • Cape Point Retail Stores: Receive a complimentary cap with any purchase over R500 at the Lighthouse Shop, Logo Shop, or Out of Africa.

Whether visiting Cape Point for the first time or returning to enjoy the newly upgraded ride, taking the Flying Dutchman Funicular remains the definitive way to reach the headland’s highest viewpoint. Visitors are encouraged to pre-book their funicular tickets online at www.capepoint.co.za
