Dream destinations in South Africa: Paternoster

Posted on 3 September 2021

We asked our Instagram followers what their dream South African holiday destinations are and Paternoster was among those mentioned most. We can’t say we’re surprised.

Other contenders were Ceres, Franschoek, Wild Coast, and the Diamond Coast.

Just a quick two-hour drive north of Cape Town, this fishing village is one of South Africa’s most iconic and dreamy villages, well known for its white-washed fishermen’s cottages, mouth-watering seafood, friendly locals, white sandy beaches, and bustling art scene.

Kayak Paternoster will give you the ultimate sea kayaking experience with an easy route geared for the enjoyment and safety of even a first-time sea-fearer. Sealife such as seals, whales and dolphins are common in the bay, so is the diversity of birdlife.

Grab a drink at the Panty Bar

The Paternoster Hotel’s Panty Bar is one of the oldest buildings to exist in this small village and is probably one of the weirdest bars you will ever visit. For those wondering what the name means – it means just that. Ladies’ underwear collected from happily married honeymooners hangs from the ceiling of the bar.

At Botha Art Gallery

Where to eat

Paternoster only has a handful of places to eat at but expect to indulge in tasty food on the menu. This village is definitely the destination to travel to for seafood lovers. The food is a bit pricey though, so make sure you plan ahead if you’re visiting on a tight budget. Here are two popular restaurants to enjoy in Paternoster.

Voorstrandt Restaurant

Voorstrandt Restaurant is one of the most popular spots you will want to visit for a meal. Unlike the buildings in the village, this red-roof restaurant doesn’t abide by the apparent building theme of white-washed houses. The restaurant is located right on the beach and is perfect for those who want to take a stroll along the shore after they’ve eaten.

Benguela Blue

If you’re visiting At Botha Art Gallery you definitely won’t miss Benguela Blue. Benguela Blue’s interior has a splash of colour and offers a delicious seafood menu like the standard fish and chips, drinks, and cakes for a sneaky dessert.
