Africa’s new ocean: The Rift Valley’s slow-motion transformation

Beneath your feet, Africa is slowly changing—and one day, it will look very different. The Great Rift Valley has been pulling the continent apart for millions of years, and scientists say the process is now speeding up.

Eventually, the Somali tectonic plate will break away, giving birth to a brand-new ocean and reshaping the African map.
