According to Good Things Guy, South Africa’s Blue Train has earned a place on a global ranking of the world’s most eye-catching rail experiences, landing at number 14. Anyone who has watched the country unfold between Pretoria and Cape Town will know this trip is about more than luxury. It is also about seeing South Africa’s landscape shift in remarkable ways across the journey.

In a world obsessed with speed, the Blue Train still offers something slower, quieter, and far more memorable.

A local icon gets global attention

The new ranking comes from travel insurer InsureandGo, which used eye-tracking research to measure which train journeys held viewers’ attention the longest and drew the fastest visual response. Out of the top 15 routes studied around the world, South Africa’s Blue Train placed 14th with a score of 75.5 out of 100.

That puts it alongside some of the world’s most talked-about rail experiences, including routes in Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Australia. For South Africa, it is a reminder that one of our most iconic travel experiences still carries serious international appeal.

More than a luxury train

The Blue Train runs between Pretoria and Cape Town on a 1,600-kilometre route, turning the cross-country trip into a 54-hour experience through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery offered by the African subcontinent.

That changing landscape is part of the magic. The train moves through big open spaces, long horizons, and dramatic shifts in terrain that make South Africa feel vast in the best possible way. On the southbound journey, there is also a stop in Kimberley, adding a layer of history to a trip already steeped in nostalgia and glamour.

It is easy to think of the Blue Train as something distant, reserved for overseas travellers or special occasion dreamers. But its staying power comes from something deeper. It has become part of South Africa’s travel identity, a rolling symbol of old-world elegance placed against very local scenery.

Why this ranking matters now

There is something especially timely about this kind of recognition. Travel trends continue to lean towards slower, more thoughtful experiences, and train journeys have become increasingly attractive to travellers looking for a calmer and more sustainable way to explore.

That is where the Blue Train fits the moment beautifully. It offers the kind of unhurried travel that many people are craving, but with a distinctly South African backdrop. Not alpine villages. Not cherry blossom valleys. Karoo distances, shifting skies, and the kind of scenery that feels cinematic precisely because it is so raw and recognisable.

For local travellers, there is also pride in seeing a homegrown classic mentioned in the same breath as famous international routes. It says something important: South Africa’s beauty does not need to compete by imitation. It stands out by being itself.

A legacy that is still pulling weight

The global ranking lands at a time when the Blue Train is already carrying serious prestige. It was named Africa’s Leading Luxury Train at the 2025 World Travel Awards, continuing a remarkable run that has kept it in the winners’ circle year after year.

That matters because the Blue Train is not just surviving on reputation. In the travel world, where trends change quickly and new luxury experiences appear all the time, remaining relevant is no small thing. This latest ranking adds a fresh angle to its legacy. Not only is it luxurious, but it is also visually unforgettable.

The bigger picture for South African tourism

For South African tourism, stories like this do more than flatter national pride. They help shift the conversation. The country is often sold through safari, coastline, and city breaks, all of which deserve attention. But rail travel has its own romance, and the Blue Train keeps proving that there is room for a different kind of bucket list trip here.

It is also one of those rare experiences that feels both timeless and unusual. In an era of rushed itineraries and airport queues, the idea of dressing for dinner while the landscape rolls by still feels wonderfully out of step with modern travel. That may be exactly why people keep looking back at it.

And now, apparently, the world is looking too.
