While a global pandemic may not seem like the most opportune time to travel, female solo travel appears to be on the rise. According to Overseas Adventure Travel, more than 24,000 single travel trips have been booked for 2021.
The company has found that most of those booking the trips are American women, particularly those over the age of 50 years old.
‘We see solo women, in particular, with a passion to meet and bond with the local people. It’s life-changing,’ said CEO and president Brian Fitzgerald.
According to research by travel company Cox & Kings, solo travel may be among the first forms of travel to come back as the global sector begins to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘They want to travel, there’s a hunger there,’ the company said.
According to Chizoba Anyaoha, who is the co-founder of TravSolo, solo travel continues to grow each year, and 25% of travellers say they will continue doing so solo in the next year. ‘Solo travel is among the top two trips that travellers plan to choose, especially during and post-COVID-19,’ she said. ‘It is easier to practice social distancing and good hygiene guidelines.’
Budget Direct Travel Insurance analyzed Instagram hashtags and geo-location data to find out what the most popular solo travel destination across the globe currently are. The research analyzed 1,426,053 Instagram posts tagged with #WomenWhoTravel, along with 6 other hashtags, including #travelgirlsgo, #shetravels, #solofemaletraveler, #damestravel, #citizenfemme and #solofemaletravel.
