Emirates elevates SA travel with retrofitted jets and premium perks

Emirates has deployed its newly upgraded Boeing 777 onto routes serving South Africa.

According to Travel and Tour World, operations began from earlier this month, including the airline’s premium economy cabin.

Cabin upgrades

For the first time, Emirates customers flying to and from South Africa will be able to enjoy its Premium Economy offering. This service features on the retrofitted 777s to elevate the onboard experience.

The overhaul delivers upgraded interiors throughout the aircraft. Updates include a modernized colour scheme, distinctive Ghaf Tree-themed designs, and wood accents in all cabins. The Business Class cabin is now a 1‑2‑1 layout to give every passenger better privacy, direct aisle access and more space. Premium Economy is outfitted with larger reclining seats, in‑seat power outlets, footrests and 13.3‑inch entertainment screens. Meanwhile, Economy has also been refreshed for greater comfort.

Roll‑out

  • Johannesburg: The retrofitted 777 is on the EK 765/766 route starting 1 September, and EK 761/762 from 25 September.
  • Cape Town: The upgraded aircraft will serve on EK 770/771 daily beginning 20 September.

Strategy

South Africa is the first African country to receive these updated 777s. Emirates’ move highlights South Africa’s importance as a key gateway in its African network, and reflects the airline’s ongoing investment in enhanced passenger experience. The retrofitting programme is extensive, covering both Boeing 777s and A380s, with a multi‑billion‑dollar investment aimed at upgrading hundreds of aircraft globally.
