Humpback whale carcass discovered on Yzerfontein beach Posted by Kyro Mitchell on 9 December 2020 The carcass of a humpback whale was discovered on 16 Mile Beach in Yzerfontein on Tuesday, December 8. According to reports from Sea Rescue Yzerfontein, the South African Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) was notified about the whale carcass by Jean Tresfon, a marine conservation photographer. The SAWDN found the whale around 4.2 km’s north of Rooipan se Klippe on 16 Mile beach. The whale measures around 10.5m and based on its discoloration, Sea Rescue Yzerfontein believes it has been lying there for a while. The South African Whale Disentanglement Network are working to determine the animal’s cause of death. DNA samples of the whale carcass have also been taken for analysis.
